What does being a Patient Family Advisor mean to you?

Hello everyone!

Last month we were thrilled to offer Core Competencies of Effective Partners with interpretation offered for Spanish-speaking Patient Family Advisors. Using interpretation allowed us to grow the diversity, not only in demographics but in the experiences that were shared. We heard from Patient Family Advisors the importance of providers putting themselves in the shoes of patients and family caregivers when being diagnosed with something serious and unexpected, making them feel more comfortable. We discovered the shared respect we all have to help our providers because they are overburdended and cannot do everything. We shared a common vision of compasion for the role of Patient Family Advisor.

In one word, describe what being a Patient Family Advisor means to you…

We appreciate the grace the patients and families participating in the session showed us as we went through this experience together. As an community, this session has inspiried us to continue opening pathways for inclusive engagement with healthcare.

Thank you to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LAC DHS) for providing interpretation for this session and opening the door for a population of PFAs eager to grow their skills and share their experiences with the larger community! Learn more about the LAC DHS Patient Family Partnership Hub that offers translation and interpretation for all activities for its members here.

Be well,
